Character: Auron
Series: Final Fantasy X, Final Fantasy X-2 (voice and sphere recording only), Kingdom Hearts 2
Version: Final Fantasy X, about two months post-game
Age: 35 (25 at time of death)
Gender: Male
Sexuality: Heterosexual

Appearance: Auron is a somewhat tall, middle-aged man. He is slightly tanned and handsome for a man his age, but he is in slight need of a shave. His hair is jet black cut shot on top, with the rest kept long and in a ponytail. He is beginning to grey, the main concentration being near his temples and a small part by his forehead. One of the first things people would notice about him is the long, red coat that he wears. He has a belt around his middle, over said coat, and he keeps his left arm out of the sleeve and rests it within the coat. It is generally only taken out during battle. On his right arm, he wears a glove that goes over the sleeve. Attached to his belt, there is a string of colorful beads that holds a jug of a presumably alcoholic beverage.

Beneath Auron’s coat, he is wearing black leather armor with gold detailing in a few places, a pair of black pants that has a few white stripes, and a pair of boots. The boots have a metal covering from the beginning of the toes to the ankle and a gold medallion is placed near the top. Auron always wears a high collar and a pair of sunglasses, perhaps to hide the scar over his right eye. His unscarred eye is a deep brown color.

Personality: While he has become slightly more conversational and carries a lighter mood about himself than he did in the past (in which he was silent unless he deemed it necessary to speak and a rather gloomy individual), his stoic attitude continues to carry through. He is not one to mince words, often being short and to the point. He does have a sense of humor, though for the most part he is a very serious man. When he does make jokes, they are often rather dry and sarcastic in nature, and most commonly presented in a battle of wits. He is an extremely loyal friend, to the point where he would stay in the world after his own death to fulfill a promise made to one. He has a very high sense of honor.

Abilities/Weaponry: Auron wields a very large katana, the Masamune. It is black in color with sections taken out from the sides and top in a circular shape and it has intricate designs on it in a primarily orange color. The flat of the blade is rested on his shoulder when it is out, and when Auron is ready to strike with it, he uses his left arm (the one normally resting in his coat) to help bring the katana down to help control it and provide extra power. Auron also has a few other abilities at his disposal:

The Breaks (Armor, Power, Mental, Magic): These are attacks aided by a little bit of magic that bring down the attributes of the foe, depending on the break used. Armor Break can either bring down the defensive capabilities of the opponent or literally break a piece of armor; Power Break lowers the opponent’s strength by hindering their attacks; Mental Break increases an opponent’s vulnerability to magic; and Magic Break lowers the power of magic cast by the opponent.

Magic: Auron is knowledgeable in some magic, but only the basic elements and only to a small degree. Mainly, they are used for practical things (for example, using Fire to start up a campfire or Blizzard to put it out), but from time to time he will use them as a quick distraction. This isn’t very common, however, as magic requires a bit of concentration and would leave him open to attack.

Overdrives: Auron’s four overdrives require quite a bit of energy and concentration to perform, often leaving him open once he is finished and recovering. As such, they are often used to finish a fight quickly or if he is quickly losing the fight.

Weaknesses: To make things a little easier on myself I’ll divide this section into two parts.

Fighting: While he may be able to deliver powerful strikes with Masamune, its size considerably slows him down, making it easier to dodge. Also, as mentioned above, his skills with magic outside of the Breaks is rather weak and, at the same time, he is rather vulnerable to magical attacks. Another hindrance in battle is that, due to his eye being scarred over, he is blind on his right side. Though he has adjusted well to the consequences of the injury, it is still entirely possible for someone to sneak up on him from the right side and do damage.

Personality: Auron’s stoic manner as well as the fact that he doesn’t often try to be social could lead people to think of him as cold and unfeeling. In addition, though it has lessened considerably over the years and it takes a lot to get him angry, Auron has a bad temper and often will act impulsively, often leading to terrible consequences. He is also very distrustful of others due to events that happened to him in the past, which further distances him from others.

History: Summoners were people who were tasked to defeat Sin, a monster that plagued the world of Spira, causing destruction and death wherever it went. In a summoner’s arsenal were a variety of creatures, known as aeons, who the summoner could call upon to fight for them. They would go on a long journey, a pilgrimage, throughout Spira from temple to temple, praying to the fayth (people who willingly gave up their souls from their still living bodies. Their souls were sealed in stone and they dreamed the aeons, bringing them to existence) to ask them to grant the summoner aeons. Once the summoner had been to all of the main temples (Besaid, Kilika, Djose, Macalania, and Bevelle) throughout Spira, they could proceed to the ruins of Zanarkand, a city destroyed a thousand years ago in a terrible war, to gain the Final Aeon. Finally, the summoner made their journey to the vast fields of the Calm Lands, where they did battle with Sin using the Final Aeon, dying in the process. Guardians protected the summoner on their journey. Now that I have established this, we may continue the tale.

Ten years ago, Auron was a member of the Warrior Monks, a group equivalent to Spira’s police and army. He was well respected for his talents and was well on his way to a very high position. However, when the high priest of Bevelle Temple offered him his daughter’s hand in marriage, Auron declined and was practically ostracized by the Yevon Church, which was the high authority of Spira. He soon resigned and eventually found himself in the company of Braska, a summoner. The two became friends and Braska asked Auron to be his guardian. He accepted.

Around the city, rumors had circulated of a man claiming to be from Zanarkand—a claim that seemed completely unbelievable due to the city’s state of ruin. His curiosity piqued, Braska, bringing Auron along, decided to meet this man, who was being held in a jail cell. The man, Jecht, continued to assert that he was, indeed, from Zanarkand, though Auron didn’t believe him and protested Braska’s sudden wish to bring him along, due to the irony it would serve should they defeat Sin, with the three of them being outcasts. Auron relented, however, knowing that it was Braska’s decision, and Jecht became Braska’s second guardian.

From the start, Auron and Jecht didn’t care for each other. It was common to see the two making jabs at each other or even getting into fights, which Braska normally had to mediate. However, as Jecht slowly progressed from being a self-centered alcoholic to showing what a kind person he really was, he and Auron became friends. Auron even began to believe that Jecht came from Zanarkand as he said, albeit a different one or even from the past. Both Auron and Braska resolved to help get Jecht back home, though Jecht’s confidence as to if it was possible was quickly beginning to decline.

Though Auron knew of the sacrifice Braska would have to make to defeat Sin, his resolve wavered, starting at the towering Mt. Gagazet and reaching its peak in the ruins of Zanarkand. The young guardian expressed his concerns to his friends, but Braska refused to give up, more concerned for the people of Spira than his own fate. Jecht, on the other hand had given up on going back to his Zanarkand, having seen the ruins for himself, and wanted to at least do something for the world.

The three entered the inner sanctum of Zanarkand temple to speak with the unsent (dead but still lingering, like a ghost but solid) summoner, Lady Yunalesca, who was to grant Braska the Final Aeon. The statue, however, was empty, and Yunalesca revealed that a guardian would be needed to become the Final Aeon for the summoner to use. Jecht volunteered for the same reason he had for continuing the journey and had Auron promise to find a way to his Zanarkand and take care of his son, Tidus. Once the promise was made, Braska and Jecht disappeared into the sanctum, Jecht became Braska’s Final Aeon, and Braska defeating Sin, becoming one of a handful of high summoners.

Auron, on the other hand, was unable to deal with the fate of his friends and revisited Yunalesca, who told him the truth: those who became the Final Aeon and were used against Sin became the next Sin, perpetuating the spiral of death that Spira was locked in. Now knowing that Braska had sacrificed his life in vain and that Jecht was now Sin, Auron flew into a rage, charging blindly at Yunalesca.

She struck first.

Auron flew backwards with mortal wounds and a wounded eye. Nevertheless, he pulled himself across Mt. Gagazet, where he met Kimahri, a young Ronso. Auron had another promise to keep with Braska: to find a way to get his daughter, Yuna, to Besaid. He told Kimahri of this promise, and the Ronso agreed to carry out this task, seeing that Auron was a dying man. Auron managed to make it to the Calm Lands before he finally collapsed, a man by the name of Rin finding him and bringing him into his care. Unfortunately, despite the treatment given to his wounds, Auron died that night.

But not even death would stop him. Auron, through sheer will and determination, kept his sense of self and became an unsent, leaving Rin’s place as soon as he could. He still had a promise to keep, after all.

Auron walked all the way to the sea, encountering Sin. Being in its early stages, Jecht still had a great amount of control over the beast. Auron’s death turned out to be useful, as now he was able to ride Sin to Jecht’s Zanarkand.

His Zanarkand was, in effect, a giant aeon, dreamed by the giant fayth that resided at the top of Mt. Gagazet. It was created to perpetuate the memory of the destroyed Zanarkand and was constantly being summoned by Yu Yevon, the former leader of the city. Yu Yevon took refuge in Sin, using it as armor. Jecht, Tidus, and the rest of the people of this Zanarkand were nothing more but dreams.

Auron took care of Tidus for ten years following his arrival in Zanarkand, serving as a surrogate father and mentor to the then seven-year-old boy. At the end of those ten years, Jecht came into contact with Auron again and the two decided to take Tidus to Spira, to experience reality. Jecht moved into the city and destruction ran rampant, the man only able to restrain the beast so much after so many years had passed. Despite the crumbling city, Tidus made it to Spira, but he and Auron were separated.

Tidus ended up meeting and traveling with Yuna, her pilgrimage eventually leading to Luca, where Tidus and Auron met up again. Auron told Tidus the truth about what his father now was before going to meet with Yuna. Both Auron and Tidus became her guardians. The party (aside from Tidus) was quite glad to have among their ranks the Legendary Guardian, a title Auron hated. He hadn’t been able to save his friends from dying a useless death. He felt he didn’t deserve the title. Auron’s role was to be the guide of the group, helping them along their path and helping Tidus get over his hate of his father. Auron was nothing more than that, however. Though he knew of the corruption of the Church of Yevon, he knew that, were he to tell the others, there was a very, very slim chance of them believing him. Beyond that, however, he would’ve preferred them to learn of it and fight because they felt as though it were the right thing to do, not because he told them to.

As they traveled, the party indeed got to see the corruption among Yevon’s ranks, first with the destruction of hundreds of lives at the hands of Sin during the ill-fated Operation Mi’Hen and then with Seymour Guado, a Maester (akin to a ruler of Spira) who thought that the only way to save Spira from Sin was to become Sin itself and destroy all life. After figuring out from a will from Seymour’s father, the late Jyscal Guado (who Seymour had murdered) that Seymour was, in Tidus’ words, “bad news,” a confrontation occurred and Seymour was killed. The Maester returned as an unsent, eventually kidnapping Yuna and forcing her into a wedding with himself, which the party crashed. They were caught after Yuna had obtained Bevelle’s aeon and eventually put on trial. They managed to escape after being thrown into the Via Purifico, a maze filled with fiends (souls of the dead whose hate has caused them to turn into terrible creatures who attack the living) and mainly designed to make the wanderer give up and die.

Seymour waited for them at the escape, clutching the dead Maester Kinoc in one of his hands. Kinoc had once been a close friend of Auron’s before he left, and was the recipient of Auron’s promised promotions, becoming Maester. Power corrupted the man, who had originally been kind, and though Kinoc wasn’t the man Auron knew, his death still enraged Auron. Once Seymour was defeated, the party made their escape. They would come into contact with him again at Mt. Gagazet, where he was defeated again.

Soon, the group reached Zanarkand. They continued their journey through the ruined city, where Auron was confronted with images of his past conjured by the pyreflies (multicolored lights that react to memories). It wasn’t until they met up with Yunalesca and everyone was told about the need for a guardian’s sacrifice that Auron was shown the image of his friends heading into the sanctum, never to return. He finally lost it then, attacking his image in vain, angry at himself for not being able to save his friends, angry that he had let “the cycle [go] on.”

Yuna wasn’t going to sacrifice her friends just like that; she wanted to know a few things first. When the whole truth surrounding Sin’s return came out, she refused to sacrifice one of her guardians to perpetuate ‘false hope.’ Yunalesca, taking her own form of pity on them, decided to take their lives as, to her, it was not worth living if you didn’t have hope, even if it was false. Auron then finally broke away from being the guide, taking charge of the situation and urging his comrades on, telling them that they could either “die and be free of pain or live and fight [their] sorrow.” They chose to fight and succeeded. It was afterwards that Auron told Tidus of his current state and the promise he had made to Jecht before stating that he wished to be sent to the Farplane (Spira’s afterlife) after this journey was through. He had been an unsent for too long.

Eventually they figured out how to stop Sin: they had to destroy Yu Yevon. Delving deep into Sin, they traversed its insides, fighting Seymour for the final time and reaching Jecht. Jecht changed to his Final Aeon form and had them challenge them, the group winning the battle. Tidus went to his quickly fading father, finally settling the differences between the two. Yu Yevon then decided to make his appearance, interrupting the reunion. With the summoning and destruction of the aeons, Yu Yevon was weakened enough to be taken head on. He was defeated and Yuna began to send the aeons that had been destroyed when she noticed that Auron himself was reacting to the sending. She hesitated for a second, but Auron encouraged her to go on. His time was through. He walked to the edge of the platform they had been on and turned to the others. “This is your world now,” he stated before disappearing in a cloud of pyreflies.

Auron spent his time in the Farplane catching up with Braska and Jecht, his sullen mood ebbing away a little bit. As he went outside to find a place to train with his blade, there was a flash of light and he found himself outside the gates of Paixao. Unsure of where he was, he headed into the city, hoping to get some answers and find a way back to where he was supposed to be.
